About this position
University of California, Santa Barbara is recruiting a Postdoctoral Scholar in global modeling of riverine sediment connectivity and human alterations through the Environmental Studies Program and the Schmitt Lab for River System Science and Sustainability (RS3).
The project focuses on developing a globally applicable framework to study sediment transport, sediment connectivity, and changes in riverine sediment fluxes and source-to-sink pathways since 1950. The successful candidate will contribute to RS3’s role in the DARE project (Digital Atlas of Riverine Ecosystem Services) within the Schmidt Sciences Virtual Institute on Earth’s Water (VIEW).
Research themes include river-network sediment-routing models, terrestrial sediment supply estimation, grain-size distributions, hydrologic model integration, geospatial analysis, remote sensing, and large-scale environmental data analysis. The postdoc is expected to take intellectual ownership of the work, from hypothesis development and analysis design to publication.
Eligibility highlights: applicants must have completed all Ph.D. requirements except the dissertation at the time of application in civil and environmental engineering, environmental sciences, geomorphology/geology, earth system science, data and computer science, or a related field; the Ph.D. must be completed by the start date. Preferred experience includes numerical sediment transport modeling, empirical sediment transport equations, geomorphology, Python/R, NetCDF/Xarray, reproducible workflows, and high-performance computing.
