About this position

This PhD project, titled 'Predicting Clad Defect Propagation of Zr-Based Alloys Under Oxidising Conditions During Dry Fuel Store', is hosted at The University of Manchester within the Department of Materials. It is embedded in a uniquely collaborative environment, uniting the Zr Group and the Nuclear Fuel Centre of Excellence—two of the UK's leading nuclear materials teams. The research is based at the Henry Royce Institute for Advanced Materials, offering access to state-of-the-art nuclear laboratories and advanced characterisation techniques such as SEM, TEM, and XRD.

The project investigates the behaviour of zirconium alloy cladding in spent nuclear fuel during dry storage, focusing on how small defects propagate under oxidising conditions. Key research questions include: how fuel swelling due to oxidation stresses the cladding, how defects grow under these stresses, and how variables like defect size, temperature, and simulated irradiation-hardening affect crack initiation and propagation. The research is highly interdisciplinary, combining materials science, mechanical engineering, and nuclear technology.

Supported by EDF UK, the project offers industrial supervision, hands-on experience, and opportunities to attend conferences and technical meetings both in the UK and internationally. You will join the Zr and Fuels Group, benefit from world-leading training including a 12-week nuclear bootcamp, and have the chance to pursue placements at EDF Energy. The group boasts 100% graduate employability, with alumni progressing to roles in academia, industry, national labs, and research facilities worldwide.

Applicants should hold or expect to achieve at least a 2.1 honours degree or a master’s (or international equivalent) in a relevant science or engineering discipline. The position is open to both Home (UK) and overseas students. The successful candidate will receive a 4-year PhD studentship with full tuition fees paid and an annual tax-free stipend at the UKRI rate (£20,780 for 2025/26, subject to annual uplift). Flexible and hybrid working options are available, and the university actively encourages applicants from diverse backgrounds and career paths.

To apply, candidates should contact the supervisors to discuss their motivation and background, then submit an online application specifying the project title, supervisor, funding status, previous study details, and two referees. Required documents include transcripts, CV, supporting statement, and English language certificate if applicable. The application deadline is September 1, 2026, but early application is recommended as the advert may be removed before the deadline.

For further information or questions about the application process, contact the admissions team at [email protected]. The University of Manchester is committed to equality, diversity, and inclusion, supporting flexible study arrangements and welcoming applicants from all sections of the community.
