About this position
This PhD project at the University of Southampton aims to revolutionize the treatment of large bone defects by developing personalized, 3D-printed scaffolds that are both strong and bioactive. The research will focus on the creation of functionalized nanoclay hydrogel bioinks, optimization of additive bio-manufacturing processes, and in vitro validation of scaffold performance. The project is highly interdisciplinary, involving collaboration between the School of Engineering, the School of Human Development and Health, and industry partner Renovos Biologics.
Key objectives include the synthesis of novel nanoclay-based hydrogel biomaterials, integration of patient-centered design, and the use of digital manufacturing feedback tools to optimize both mechanical and biological properties of the scaffolds. The research will address the rapid regeneration of critical-sized bone defects resulting from accidents or disease, with a strong emphasis on translational pathways and industry integration.
As a PhD student, you will undertake four main tasks: (1) develop novel bioink and scaffold materials, (2) create bespoke bioprinting strategies, (3) conduct biological validation for pre-clinical proof, and (4) explore the translational and industrial integration of the developed technologies. The project offers a unique opportunity to work at the interface of engineering, medicine, and industry, contributing to digitally informed healthcare manufacturing and accelerating clinical translation.
Applicants must hold a UK 2:1 honours degree or its international equivalent. The University of Southampton offers a range of funding opportunities for both UK and international students, including Horizon Europe fee waivers, competition-based Presidential Bursaries, and studentships that may cover tuition fees and provide a stipend for living costs. Funding is awarded on a rolling basis, so early application is encouraged.
The University is committed to equality, diversity, and inclusivity, and welcomes applicants from all backgrounds. Flexible working patterns and career breaks are fully considered. The institution also provides generous maternity policies, onsite childcare, and a range of benefits to support well-being and work-life balance. The University of Southampton is recognized for its commitment to sustainability and has received the Platinum EcoAward.
