About this position
This Dual Award PhD project, offered jointly by Coventry University (UK) and Universitas Indonesia, addresses the urgent need for sustainable solutions in electric vehicle (EV) battery recycling and resource optimisation. The research is situated within the Centre for Clean Growth and Future Mobility at Coventry University and will be supervised by Professor Benny Tjahjono, with additional support from Universitas Indonesia.
The project focuses on the transition to a circular economy in sustainable energy, emphasizing strategies and policies that optimize resource utilization, minimize waste, and ensure long-term energy sustainability. Sustainable design is a key aspect, aiming to improve the efficiency, longevity, and recyclability of EV batteries. With the rapid adoption of EVs, managing end-of-life (EOL) batteries has become a critical challenge. This research seeks to develop methods for effective recovery and repurposing of EOL batteries, reducing environmental impact and conserving valuable materials.
Unlike traditional linear models, the circular approach integrates renewable energy, efficient resource allocation, and sustainable waste management to enhance energy security and minimize environmental harm. The project will explore strategies such as optimizing energy recovery from EOL batteries, improving lifecycle management, and fostering industrial symbiosis through resource-sharing networks. Policy interventions, including incentives for green technology and regulatory frameworks for battery recovery, are also central to the research.
Advanced analytical tools will be employed to evaluate trade-offs and optimize resource flows within the EOL EV battery supply chain. The research utilizes operations research techniques, including mathematical programming, network optimization, and simulation methods, to analyze resource allocation and battery recovery processes. Two-stage network Data Envelopment Analysis (DEA) and System Dynamics methodology will be applied to assess design efficiency and sustainability of recycling systems. Stochastic modelling will address uncertainties in EOL battery supply chains.
The ultimate goal is to develop a robust decision-support framework for policymakers and industry stakeholders, enabling efficient, cost-effective, and scalable circular economy strategies for EV battery recovery. This will contribute to enhanced sustainability in the EV sector.
Students will spend the first two years at Universitas Indonesia and the final 1.5 years at Coventry University, gaining international research experience and access to leading facilities.
