About this position

Imperial College London is advertising a Research Associate for AI and Nuclear Engineering Modelling within the Applied Modelling & Computation Group (AMCG) in the Department of Earth Science & Engineering, Faculty of Engineering.

This post focuses on computational modelling, reactor physics, neutronics, and AI/data-driven methods for two cutting-edge nuclear projects: an industry-funded digital engineering platform for the design and optimisation of a novel thorium reactor, and a UKRI-backed agentic digital ecosystem for the lifecycle of next-generation High-Temperature Gas-Cooled Reactors (HTGRs).

The role is suitable for candidates with a strong background in applied mathematics, physics, nuclear engineering, or closely related computational disciplines. Applicants should have experience with numerical discretisation methods such as Finite Element or Finite Volume approaches, and scientific programming in Fortran, C/C++, or Python. Experience with HPC, OpenMC, Serpent, MCNP, WIMS, SCALE, burnup/depletion modelling, or machine learning for physics problems is highly desirable.

The post is full-time, fixed term for up to 33 months, with up to three posts available. Salary is £50,733 - £59,484 per annum.

Location: South Kensington Campus - Hybrid, Imperial College London, United Kingdom.

Deadline: 17 November 2026. Apply online via the Imperial recruitment portal. For further information, contact Chris Pain at [email protected].
