About this position
Research Fellow in Soil Imaging and Computed Tomography at Cranfield University.
This fixed-term research role (30 months) sits within the Faculty of Engineering and Applied Sciences and Cranfield’s Environmental Sustainability Theme. The project focuses on soil science, environmental science, geoscience, materials science, and advanced X-ray / synchrotron imaging to study pore-scale structure, mineral-carbon interactions, weathering, and organic carbon storage across the soil–bedrock continuum.
The successful candidate will lead synchrotron and X-ray imaging work for a UKRI Future Leaders Fellowship, including experiments at Diamond Light Source. Methods mentioned include X-ray micro-computed tomography and X-ray Absorption Near Edge Structure (XANES), plus laboratory-based imaging and development of analytical workflows for 2D and 3D datasets.
Eligibility highlights: doctoral-level training in Physics, Materials Science, Engineering, Geoscience, Environmental Science, or a related discipline; strong experience in lab-based or synchrotron CT imaging; ability to design and deliver imaging experiments; and confidence working with complex datasets. Experience with large-scale research facilities is desirable.
Funding / salary: paid staff position with a starting salary of £37,897–£45,580 per annum, rising potentially to £52,067 per annum.
