Spitting Image: Political Satire in Britain in the 20th and 21st Centuries – AHRC Collaborative Doctoral Partnership PhD Studentship University of Exeter in United Kingdom

The University of Exeter, in partnership with Cambridge University Libraries and Archives, invites applications for a fully-funded PhD studentship under the AHRC Collaborative Doctoral Partnership Scheme. This unique opportunity, starting 1 October 2026, offers the successful candidate the chance to undertake research at both Exeter and Cambridge, joining a vibrant cohort of CDP-funded students across the UK.

The project, 'Spitting Image: political satire in Britain in the 20th and 21st centuries', will be supervised by Dr Meredith Hale (University of Exeter) and Dr Christopher Burgess (Cambridge University Libraries and Archives), with additional support from Dr Neil Ewen and Kevin Roberts. The research will focus on the iconic television series Spitting Image, which revolutionized British political satire through its use of puppetry and sharp caricature of political and cultural figures. Drawing on the recently donated Roger Law archive, the student will explore the conception, production, and reception of Spitting Image across its original run (1984–1996) and its reboots (2020, 2025), examining how shifts in media, identity, race, gender, and inequality have shaped the genre.

The project aims to produce the first in-depth scholarly analysis of Spitting Image, utilizing archival materials and engaging with creators to contribute original research to the fields of history, art, media studies, and political science. The student will have the opportunity to select a portion of the archive for detailed study and will produce both academic and public-facing outputs for the Cambridge Digital Library. The research is transdisciplinary, addressing material, performative, cultural, social, and political aspects of satire.

Applicants should hold a Masters Degree in a relevant subject or demonstrate equivalent experience. The studentship is open to both home and international candidates and can be pursued full or part-time. The funding package includes full tuition (UK or international), an annual maintenance allowance of £21,805 (2026/27 rate), and an additional CDP maintenance payment of £600 per year.
