About this position

Two PhD positions are available in biogas process development and microbiology at the Department of Molecular Sciences, Swedish University of Agricultural Sciences (SLU) in Uppsala, Sweden.

The projects sit within the Microbial Biotechnology research group and are linked to the Biogas Solutions Research Center (BSRC). One project focuses on biogas production from agricultural feedstocks, including process optimisation, laboratory-scale biogas operation, chemical and microbiological analyses, and possible process modelling. The other focuses on process microbiology, using molecular biology and bioinformatics to study microbial communities, operating conditions, process stability, and microbial markers for disturbance prediction.

Applicants should hold a Master’s degree in biology, microbiology, biotechnology, molecular biotechnology, bioinformatics, or a related field. Strong English skills are required, and experience with biogas processes, modelling/programming, statistics, or Swedish is considered an advantage.

The positions are full-time doctoral studentships for four years with salary according to the local collective agreement for doctoral students. The application deadline is 2026-08-31. Applicants may apply for one or both projects and must state their first priority in the application.

Principal supervisor: Professor Anna Schnürer.
