About this position

A postdoctoral research scholarship is available at Instituto de Telecomunicações in Lisboa, Portugal, within the ERC-funded project LESYNCH – Limits and Efficiency of Coding Against Synchronization Errors (ERC-2025-STG – 101218842).

The project focuses on the rigorous mathematical and information-theoretic study of communication settings with synchronization errors. The successful candidate will work in the Security and Quantum Information – Lx group and contribute to new results on the limits of coding against synchronization errors, as well as the development of new synchronisation error-correcting code constructions with efficient encoding and decoding algorithms.

The position is framed as a one-year postdoctoral research scholarship with the possibility of renewal according to FCT regulations. The expected start date is October 2026 or soon thereafter. The work will be carried out at Instituto de Telecomunicações in Lisboa under the supervision of Professor Dr. João Ribeiro.

Eligibility highlights: applicants should hold a PhD or equivalent in Computer Science or a closely related field. The PhD must have been obtained within the last three years, and the candidate’s research must not have been developed at IT. Prior research experience in probabilistic methods in coding theory and in applying pseudo-random techniques to design error-correcting codes with efficient algorithms is specifically requested.

Application window: the competition is open from 12 August 2026 to 25 August 2026. Applications must be submitted online through the IT portal; e-mail submissions are not accepted.

Required documents: cover letter, detailed CV with transcripts, and copies of relevant certificates. The degree certificate(s) are required to sign the contract.

Funding details

Full funding including tuition fees and living expenses is available for this position. The scholarship covers all educational costs and provides a monthly stipend.

How to apply

Please submit your application including a cover letter, CV, academic transcripts, and contact information for two references. Applications should be sent via the online portal before the deadline.
