The GREiA Research Group at the University of Lleida is offering a PhD position focused on the use of concrete as a material for high-temperature thermal energy storage (TES). The project is centered on developing concrete-based sensible heat storage materials that can maintain thermal and mechanical performance under repeated high-temperature cycling. The doctoral researcher will join one of the University of Lleida’s PhD programmes and work within GREiA, a research group with long-standing expertise in thermal energy storage technologies, energy-efficient buildings, control strategies, industrial applications, and life cycle assessment. The topic combines energy materials, concrete/cementitious formulation design, and experimental characterization for next-generation TES applications. Main research tasks include design and optimisation of concrete and cementitious formulations, experimental characterisation of thermal, physical, and mechanical properties, assessment of durability and degradation mechanisms, evaluation of suitability for TES applications, and compatibility testing with heat transfer fluids. The project is clearly research-oriented and suited to candidates interested in materials development for sustainable energy systems. Applicants should hold a two-year master’s degree (120 ECTS) or an equivalent degree in Civil Engineering, Materials Science/Engineering, Industrial Engineering, or a closely related field. Experience with concrete mix design, thermal/mechanical testing, DSC/TGA, or thermal energy storage will strengthen the application. An excellent level of English is required. The appointment is for 4 years and begins on 15 January 2027, or by mutual agreement. The minimum salary is approximately 17,190.48€ per year before tax and social security, depending on seniority.
