Marie Skłodowska-Curie Actions COFUND

The University of Eastern Finland is offering a four-year Doctoral Researcher position within the Marie Skłodowska-Curie Actions COFUND Doctoral Programme for Advancing Forest-Based Bioeconomy (DP-FOBI). Based at the Joensuu campus, this opportunity focuses on the bioactivity of biomass-derived chemical fractions in material applications, with a research theme centered on the isolation, purification, and functional evaluation of bioactive compounds from forest-based side streams such as bark and lignocellulosic residues.

The project builds on prior doctoral research demonstrating antiviral activity in crude biomass extracts, aiming to identify specific compounds responsible for bioactivity through systematic fractionation, chemical characterization, and targeted bioassays. The research seeks to establish a mechanistic understanding of antifungal, antimicrobial, and antiviral activity in relation to molecular composition, including synergistic interactions between compounds. Additionally, the project explores the application potential of selected biomass-derived fractions as surface coatings for materials, evaluating their ability to impart resistance to biological degradation, modify surface hydrophobicity, and improve durability.

Through a dual focus on fundamental understanding and application development, the project aims to identify high-value end uses for biomass-derived chemical products and support their commercialization within a sustainable and resource-efficient bioeconomy. The position offers supportive supervision by experienced researchers, access to comprehensive doctoral training, DP-FOBI activities (workshops, summer schools, research visits, secondments), and opportunities for collaboration within a vibrant interdisciplinary network and with industry partners.

Employment is for a fixed term of four years, with a total working time of 1,612 hours per year and a four-month probationary period. The salary follows the Marie Skłodowska-Curie Actions system, including a living allowance (EUR 3,200/month), mobility allowance (EUR 87/month), family allowance (EUR 300/month for eligible researchers), paid leave, holiday bonus, travel allowance (EUR 1,500/year), additional travel allowance (EUR 10,500 total), research costs (EUR 6,000 total), and special needs allowance/support if required. Applicants must have a Master’s degree (or equivalent) in biorefining engineering, chemistry, chemical engineering, material science, or a closely related field, must not have a doctoral degree at the time of the call deadline, and must meet the MSCA mobility rule (less than 12 months in Finland during the past 3 years). Language skills requirements for the Doctoral Programme in Science, Forestry and Technology at UEF must be fulfilled. Candidates should demonstrate solid understanding of experimental laboratory work, chemical analysis, material science, and preferably knowledge of natural products chemistry or biomass chemistry. Experience with chemical characterization methods and/or chemical engineering separation processes is advantageous. Additional requirements include the ability to work independently, strong collaboration skills, enthusiasm, creativity, willingness to travel, and proficiency in Finnish (advantage). Proof of English proficiency is required if not evident from academic credentials.
