About this position
Fully funded PhD opportunity in Polymer Engineering, Polymer Science, Chemistry, Materials Science, and Chemical Engineering at the PRISM Research Institute, Technological University of the Shannon (TUS), Athlone, Ireland.
The project, SulphGuard, focuses on developing sulphur-based, animal-repelling and nutrient-releasing biodegradable polymers for sustainable livestock fencing solutions. The research will use inverse vulcanization to create new biodegradable sulphur-based polymers designed to gradually biodegrade into plant-available sulphates, release sulphur-containing volatiles to deter livestock and wildlife, and support sustainable agriculture and circular economy applications.
Applicants should have a background in Polymer Science, Polymer Engineering, Chemistry, Materials Science, Chemical Engineering, or a closely related discipline. Strong interest in polymer synthesis, materials characterisation, biodegradable materials, and laboratory research is essential. Experience with FTIR, DSC, TGA, SEM, or polymer processing is desirable but not required.
Funding includes full PhD tuition fees, a €16,000 annual stipend, €1,500 per year for research consumables, a €1,000 laptop allowance, and a 48-month PhD programme.
Location is the PRISM Research Institute, TUS Athlone Campus, Ireland, with access to facilities for polymer synthesis, processing, spectroscopy, microscopy, and biodegradation testing.
Deadline: 31 August 2026 at 9:00 am. To apply, download the TUS Scholarship Application Form, include “SulphGuard” in the email subject line, and submit the application to [email protected]. Informal enquiries can be sent to Dr Yuanyuan Chen and Dr Amin Abbasi.
