About this position

University of Antwerp is offering a full-time doctoral scholarship in transport economics within the Department of Transport and Spatial Economics, part of the Faculty of Business and Economics. The position focuses on transport economic policy, goods transport, and data-driven policy analysis, with the goal of developing a policy-oriented modelling tool to assess the impact of policy measures on freight transport.

The successful candidate will work closely with the research team and the Department of Mobility and Public Works (MOW), contribute to ongoing research projects and research lines, and present findings at national and international conferences. The doctorate involves preparing a research plan and methodology in consultation with the supervisor(s), carrying out the research to a high standard, reporting progress to committees, and ultimately defending the doctoral thesis publicly. Publication in international scientific journals is also expected.

The scholarship is intended for a period of 12 months and is renewable after positive evaluation and subject to available funding, up to a maximum of 4 years. The monthly scholarship is paid according to the doctoral scholarship scales for the Special Academic Staff. Additional benefits include ecocheques, an internet connectivity allowance, and either a bicycle allowance or full reimbursement of commuting costs by public transport. The position is mainly based at Stadscampus in Antwerp.

Eligibility highlights include a master’s degree in economics, engineering sciences, or an equivalent qualification by the start date, excellent academic results, experience in transport economics, and good command of Dutch and English. Applicants should also be aligned with the faculty and university research policy and work in a quality-oriented, honest, creative, and collaborative way.

Applications must be submitted via the University of Antwerp online recruitment platform by 24 August 2026 at 23:59 Brussels time. Candidates should upload a motivation letter and a short document demonstrating experience in transport economics. For practical questions about the application form, contact [email protected]. For substantive questions about the position, contact [email protected].
