About this position

Monash University’s Centre for Health Economics is advertising a fully funded PhD scholarship in Global Health Economics at the Caulfield campus in Melbourne, Australia.

The project sits within CHE’s Global and Environmental Health Economics Research Theme and is a strong fit for applicants interested in economics, health economics, applied economics, climate economics, environmental economics, and policy-relevant quantitative research.

Potential research areas include aid effectiveness and locally led development, health care financing and universal health coverage, medicines and health technologies for LMICs, health technology assessment and priority-setting, climate change and environmental health economics, and expanding access to digital health.

The successful candidate will receive training in applied microeconometrics, discrete choice experiments, administrative data analysis, modelling and simulation, and policy evaluation. The project is especially suitable for a strong quantitative researcher who wants to work with large administrative and survey datasets and modern causal inference methods.

Supervision is by Associate Professor Rohan Sweeney and Dr Maame Esi Woode at Monash University.

Funding includes tuition fee coverage and a tax-free stipend of AU$37,000 per year, with the possibility of up to AU$47,000 per year for outstanding students. Additional support may be available through research and teaching assistance work.

Eligibility: applicants should have completed an Honours degree, a four-year bachelor’s degree, or a master’s degree with excellent results and a research component in a relevant quantitative discipline such as economics, econometrics, public policy, data science, statistics, psychology, or public health. Strong skills in Stata or R are an advantage. English language requirements apply.

Applications for a February 2027 commencement open on 1 July 2026 and close on 31 August 2026. Applicants should use the Monash Integrated PhD program application process once the round opens.
