About this position

The University of Antwerp is offering a full-time doctoral scholarship student position in electrochemical engineering within the ELCAT research group in the Faculty of Applied Engineering. The project sits in the area of electrode and reactor engineering and is part of the recently granted FWO-NOW Weave collaboration with Prof. Marc Koper. The research aims to advance CO2 electrolysis technology for large-scale deployment by improving efficiency and stability at elevated temperatures above 60°C and pressures up to 30 bar, under industrially relevant current densities.

The doctoral researcher will design novel porous transport layers for efficient CO2 reduction under elevated temperature and pressure conditions and integrate them into a transport-optimized electrolyzer design. The work focuses on understanding the combined effects of temperature and pressure on CO2 electrolysis and using that knowledge to develop a durable electrode and electrolyzer concept. The position also includes publication of scientific articles and/or patents, together with support for research and teaching activities in the group and responsibility for safety in the labs, especially related to gases and chemicals.

The role is hosted at Campus Drie Eiken in Antwerp, Belgium, within a dynamic and internationally oriented university environment. The University of Antwerp emphasizes innovative research, academic quality, and an inclusive working culture. The scholarship is offered initially for one year, with the possibility of renewal for a further three years following positive evaluation. The monthly scholarship amount is determined according to the BAP doctoral scholarship scales.

Applicants should hold, or be close to obtaining, a relevant master’s degree in industrial science/applied engineering: chemistry, engineering: chemistry, materials science, or chemistry, or be able to demonstrate an equivalent background through experience. Strong study results, solid communication and organization skills, technical ability, and a commitment to quality, safety, integrity, creativity, and cooperation are highlighted as important. The application deadline is 22 September 2026 at midnight Brussels time, and applications must be submitted via the University of Antwerp online platform with a motivation letter and academic CV.
