About this position

PhD opportunity at Monash University Malaysia under the Global Excellence and Mobility Scholarship (GEMS 2027) in sustainable ammonia production through thermocatalytic nitrogen conversion.

This project sits at the intersection of chemical engineering, materials science, chemistry, and environmental science. The research aims to develop advanced thermocatalytic systems for efficient nitrogen activation and ammonia synthesis under milder, more sustainable conditions. Key themes include rational design of earth-abundant catalyst materials, mechanistic studies of reaction pathways, identification of rate-limiting steps, and use of in-situ characterisation to link structure, properties, and performance. Experimental work may be complemented by computational modelling.

The project is supervised by Prof. Meng Nan Chong (main supervisor), with associate supervisors Dr. Joshua Zheyan Soo and Prof. Alexandr Simonov.

This is a competitive funded PhD project for students worldwide. Applicants must have at least First Class Honours (H1) or an equivalent qualification recognised by Monash Malaysia. No separate scholarship application is required; you apply for admission to your preferred degree program and select the scholarship type during the application process.

Before applying, the post recommends contacting the main supervisor and sharing your academic background and achievements so suitability can be assessed.

Deadline shown on the listing: 31 January 2027.
