About this position

Leeds Institute of Textiles and Colour is advertising a fully funded PhD opportunity at the University of Leeds on smart textiles for cancer therapy.

The project explores stimulus-responsive textile meshes for targeted anticancer drug delivery and catheter integration, with a strong interdisciplinary focus spanning textile engineering, biomaterials, polymer science, and biomedical research. The research aims to develop innovative smart textile technologies capable of delivering anticancer drugs directly to tumour sites using ultrasound-triggered release.

Supervision is with Professor Giuseppe Tronci, Dr Xuebin Yang, and Professor Stephen Russell, in collaboration with the Clothworkers’ Centre for Textile Materials Innovation for Healthcare (CCTMIH), the University of Leeds School of Dentistry, and the School of Design.

Funding includes full tuition fees, a UKRI maintenance stipend, and an additional £10,000 LITAC grant for research consumables, professional development, and dissemination activities.

Applicants are encouraged from backgrounds in polymer/materials science, engineering, or cell biology, especially those interested in translating advanced materials research into real healthcare impact.

Application deadline: 30 September 2026.
