About this position

PhD opportunity in the Cognitive Neuroscience of Language at the University of Birmingham.

The project, Keeping Up with Conversation: Bilingualism and the Resilient Ageing Brain, is co-supervised by Tamara Swaab, Andrea Krott, and Eleanor Huizeling. It sits at the intersection of language processing, bilingualism, prediction, attention, speech perception, gestures, and cognitive ageing.

The student will investigate how younger and older adults use speech, visible speech, and gestures to support communication, and how language experience shapes these processes. Training and research experience may include EEG and innovative frequency-tagging methods (RIFT), with possible opportunities to work with MEG, structural and functional MRI, and TMS in the School of Psychology and the Centre for Human Brain Health (CHBH).

This is a BBSRC-funded studentship within the Midlands Integrative Biosciences Training Partnership, and studentships are awarded competitively.

Deadline: 23 November 2026.
