About this position
Cardiff University’s School of Global Humanities is offering fully funded PhD studentships through the Welsh Graduate School for the Social Sciences (WGSSS / ESRC DTP) in the Linguistics and Bilingualism Pathway, starting in October 2027.
Applicants are invited to propose a doctoral research topic in areas aligned with staff expertise in linguistics, bilingualism, English language, functional linguistics, psycho-linguistics, socio-linguistics, and related topics such as language policy and planning. Funding is comprehensive: the studentship covers tuition fees, provides an annual tax-free living stipend at UKRI minimum rates (currently £21,805 for 2026/27 full-time), and includes access to a Research Training Support Grant. A funded 3-month Research in Practice placement is also part of the award. International students are eligible, and funded students will not be charged the UK/international fee difference.
Eligibility is broad: applicants should have qualifications or experience equivalent to a UK honours degree at first or upper second-class level, or a master’s degree. Non-traditional academic backgrounds are welcome, and applicants must meet UKRI eligibility requirements. English language competency evidence may be required depending on institutional rules.
