About this position

Monash University Malaysia is advertising a PhD Global Excellence and Mobility Scholarship (GEMS 2026) project on nano-enabled detection and risk communication of microplastics in ASEAN food chains. The project sits within the Graduate Research Thematic Cluster Integrated Strategies in Microplastics Research and combines analytical chemistry, nanotechnology, materials science, environmental science, ecotoxicology, food hygiene, digital media, and public policy.

The research aims to develop a rapid, sensitive, and selective microplastics detection system using functionalised nanomaterials, including molecularly imprinted polymers or hydrophobic dyes, then apply it to real-world samples from Malaysia and Indonesia. A second phase focuses on culturally tailored risk communication across ASEAN using digital media analytics and behavioural science to support awareness, preventive action, and cross-border policy frameworks.

Suitable applicants should have a background in nanotechnology, materials science, analytical chemistry, environmental science, or food science. Experience in nanomaterial synthesis, sensor development, or microplastic detection is an advantage. The post also highlights strong analytical skills, scientific curiosity, and the ability to work collaboratively across disciplines. Applicants must meet Monash University Malaysia’s English language requirements and hold at least First Class Honours (H1) or equivalent recognised by the university.

This is a funded PhD opportunity under GEMS. Funding notes state that recipients will be supported for an immersive year at Monash University Australia, Monash University Indonesia, or the Indian Institute of Technology Bombay for up to 9 months, with access to Monash’s global research network and infrastructure during candidature.

How to apply: contact the main supervisor first with your academic background and achievements to assess fit. If suitable, submit the application via the GEMS application route and ensure the same research topic is entered exactly as advertised. Review the application submission guide and select Global Excellence and Mobility Scholarship (GEMS).

Location: Subang Jaya, Malaysia.
