About this position

Monash University Malaysia is advertising a PhD Global Excellence and Mobility Scholarship (GEMS 2027) project in catalyst engineering for electrochemical biomass valorisation and green hydrogen production. The research sits at the intersection of chemical engineering, chemistry, materials science, nanotechnology, and energy technologies, with a strong sustainability focus.

The project investigates the electrochemical conversion of glycerol (a biodiesel by-product) as an alternative anodic reaction to reduce the energy demand of water electrolysis while producing green hydrogen and value-added chemicals. Students will work on developing catalysts with high selectivity and stability, including conventional inorganic catalysts and advanced bio-mimetic / nanozyme-inspired electrocatalysts. The work includes mechanistic studies, product selectivity, catalyst structure and surface-property analysis, and advanced characterisation to build structure-activity-selectivity relationships.

This is a competitive funded PhD opportunity for students worldwide. The post states that applicants should have at least First Class Honours (H1) or an equivalent qualification recognised by Monash Malaysia. No separate scholarship application is required: applicants apply for admission to the preferred degree program and select the scholarship type during the application process.

Before applying, candidates are advised to contact the main supervisor, Prof. Chai Siang Piao, and provide details of their academic background and achievements for suitability assessment. Associate supervisors listed include Dr. Lutfi Kurnianditia Putri, Assoc. Prof. Lling-Lling Tan, and Dr. Priya Samudrala.

The project is based at Monash University Malaysia in Subang Jaya, Malaysia. The deadline shown on the listing is 31 January 2027.
