About this position

The International Max Planck Research School (IMPRS) on Cognitive NeuroImaging invites excellent students to apply for PhD positions in a highly interdisciplinary, internationally connected doctoral programme based in Leipzig, Germany.

The school focuses on cognitive neuroscience, clinical and translational neuroscience, and neuroimaging, combining research and training across the Max Planck Institute for Human Cognitive and Brain Sciences, Leipzig University, TU Dresden, and University College London. Doctoral researchers join a structured 3-year PhD programme with access to advanced facilities such as high-field MRI systems, MEG, TMS, tDCS, NIRS, and EEG infrastructure, alongside strong support for computational and methodological training.

Applications are welcomed from candidates with an excellent master’s degree or equivalent in a range of relevant disciplines, including cognitive neuroscience, computational neuroscience, psychology, medicine, neurobiology, computer science, engineering, mathematics, physics, and neuroimaging. Students nearing completion of their master’s degree are encouraged to apply, and in exceptional cases bachelor’s degree holders may also be considered. Research experience relevant to the graduate school’s scope is essential, and strong oral and written English proficiency is required because English is the language of teaching and supervision.

The programme emphasises open science, good research practice, and individualised development through a tailored training plan. Teaching includes introductory courses, advanced project-specific training, scientific seminars, and transferable skills courses. Doctoral researchers may also receive support for research stays of up to three months at partner institutions.

Funding is available for a limited number of positions through German TVöD contracts at 65% of pay group 13, with remuneration currently around €40,600 gross annually. Where supervisor funding is unavailable, positively evaluated candidates may be able to apply for external funding.

The application deadline is 02 November 2026. Shortlisted candidates will be invited to online panel interviews in January 2027, and the PhD programme is scheduled to start in October 2027. Applications must be submitted online via the IMPRS application portal.

For further details, applicants should consult the programme website and the requirements page, and direct enquiries to the graduate school office by email.
