About this position

PhD scholarship opportunity at the University of Newcastle, Australia in the Cancer Signalling Research Group for a project on AI and machine learning for precision treatment of paediatric brain cancer within the internationally collaborative ADAPTS Program.

The project focuses on diffuse midline glioma (DMG), a highly aggressive paediatric, adolescent, and young adult brain tumour. The successful candidate will develop and apply machine learning and deep learning models to integrate multiomics and clinical data, including patient biopsies, cerebrospinal fluid (CSF), blood samples, patient-derived xenograft (PDX) models, spatial transcriptomics, proteomics, and single-cell sequencing data.

Research aims include modelling tumour evolution, predicting therapeutic response and resistance, and informing sequential treatment strategies to support real-time, personalised precision medicine.

Funding: $38,938 per annum (2026 rate), indexed annually, for 3.5 years. The scholarship includes a tuition fee scholarship and up to $1,500 relocation allowance.

Eligibility highlights: domestic students only; applicants must meet PhD admission requirements. Preferred background includes computer science, AI, bioinformatics, data science, or a related area, plus strong Python and/or R programming, machine learning/data analysis experience, and familiarity with deep learning frameworks.

Supervisor: Professor Matt Dun.

Deadline: 14 September 2026.

How to apply: Email your expression of interest with academic transcripts, CV, a brief statement of research interests, and a proposal linked to the project to [email protected] by 5pm on the closing date.
