About this position

Wrocław University of Science and Technology is offering a PhD scholarship in the Department of Artificial Intelligence within the AITAX project, an applied research initiative focused on using advanced AI to automate the analysis and processing of tax data. The project addresses the complexity and frequent change of modern tax regulations by developing a semantic repository for tax documents, machine learning methods for embedding-based representation, semantic search tools, interpretation summarisation, and chatbot support for defining factual states and generating tax ruling applications.

The research combines natural language processing, large language models, in-context learning, dynamic prompting, and conversational memory mechanisms. The successful candidate will contribute to developing and testing AI algorithms for semantic search and summarisation of tax rulings, support the creation of a semantic repository for tax rulings and court decisions, and prepare scientific publications based on the research outcomes.

The position is a PhD scholarship rather than a standard salaried employment contract. It is funded through the European Funds for a Modern Economy (FENG) 2021–2027 Priority 2 under the First Team competition. The scholarship provides a monthly amount of 5000 PLN for 1 year. The project is associated with the Foundation for Polish Science FIRST TEAM/FENG programme and is positioned at the intersection of AI, legal data analysis, and tax law applications.

Eligibility highlights include a completed Master’s degree in Computer Science, Mathematics, Data Engineering, Law, or a related field, enrollment in a doctoral school, strong English skills for reading technical literature and writing scientific papers, and solid programming and AI experience in Python, PyTorch, Scikit-learn, Hugging Face Transformers, and related development tools. Experience with legal data, tax rulings, or court decisions is preferred. The role suits candidates motivated to work in a multidisciplinary research team and to publish academic work in a fast-moving applied AI domain.

Application deadline: 14 September 2026 at 12:00 PM (Europe/Warsaw). Planned start date: 1 October 2026. Applications should be sent by email to Marta Hoffman-Homa at [email protected] and should include the requested documents: Master’s diploma or certificate, doctoral school enrollment confirmation, CV, and signed consent for personal data processing. Selected candidates will be contacted individually for interview details.
