About this position
PhD scholarship in Grundtvig Studies at the Faculty of Theology, University of Copenhagen. The position is part of the research project Writing with the Dead – N.F.S. Grundtvig’s Use of Historical Sources (WWD), which examines how the Danish theologian, thinker, and poet N.F.S. Grundtvig worked with textual sources from antiquity to his own day.
The project combines Theology, Religious Studies, History, and Literature, with shared theoretical foundations in Modern Genre Studies and Conceptual History. The PhD student will work in an interdisciplinary environment affiliated with the section of Church History at UCPH South Campus and may also conduct parts of the project at other South Campus departments and at the Royal Danish Library.
Applicants from Theology or the Humanities are especially encouraged. The call is particularly interested in projects on Grundtvig’s engagement with sources from Late Antiquity, the Early Church, or Romanticism, though other proposals on Grundtvig’s use of historical sources are welcome. The successful candidate is expected to participate in research, teaching, and conference activities related to Grundtvig’s writings and their genesis and impact.
Desired experience includes collaborative research, archival research, and use of Transkribus. Knowledge of Grundtvig’s writings and sources and ability to read 19th-century vernacular Danish are advantages. The position requires master’s-level qualifications related to the topic.
This is a 36-month PhD scholarship starting on 2027-02-01 or as soon as possible thereafter. Salary starts at DKK 31,600/month plus pension contribution, and the PhD fellow must complete 840 working hours of departmental duties without additional pay.
