About this position
PhD Scholarship in Middle Eastern Archaeology and Geoarchaeology at the Department of Cross-Cultural and Regional Studies, Faculty of Humanities, University of Copenhagen.
This three-year PhD scholarship is part of the project Networks Before Agriculture: Social Interaction in Epipalaeolithic and Neolithic Jordan, led by Professor Tobias Richter. The project examines socio-material networks in the Final Pleistocene and Early Holocene Levant and focuses on the geological sourcing of inorganic raw materials from sites in Qa’ Shubayqa, eastern Jordan.
The PhD fellow will work on thin-section optical analysis, XRD, and SEM/EDX analysis of inorganic raw materials, combining archaeology, geology, geoarchaeology, material culture studies, and computational methods. The role includes primary data collection and analysis, fieldwork in Jordan, teaching duties, presenting at scientific meetings, and co-organizing an international workshop. Collaboration is expected with researchers at the Globe Institute, the Department of Geosciences and Natural Resource Management, and the Department of Geology at the University of Jordan.
Applicants should have a master’s-level background in Middle/Near Eastern Archaeology, Prehistoric Archaeology, Geoarchaeology, Geology, or a related field. Relevant fieldwork experience is required, along with strong writing and research skills. Experience with geological methods, sample preparation, data analysis/visualization, and software such as R, Python, or GIS is an advantage. A high level of academic English is required.
The scholarship is for three years and includes salary under the Danish AC agreement, starting at approximately DKK 31,800 per month plus pension. The PhD fellow will also perform departmental duties equivalent to 840 working hours over the degree period.
