About this position
PhD scholarship in Quantum Photovoltaics in Twisted 2D Materials at DTU Electro, Technical University of Denmark, in Denmark.
This PhD project sits at the intersection of physics, materials science, electrical engineering, photonics, optoelectronics, and nanotechnology. The research focuses on atomically thin 2D materials, twisted van der Waals heterostructures, nonlinear optics, nanofabrication, and photovoltaic device physics. The goal is to understand how twist angle and stacking order influence light-induced charge transport and to engineer unconventional photovoltaic effects without conventional p–n junctions.
You will join the Thin-Film Photovoltaics Group at DTU Electro and work within the Novo Nordisk Foundation NERD program Quantum Interfaces. The team includes PhD students and postdoctoral researchers with expertise in materials growth, nanoscale fabrication, advanced spectroscopy, nonlinear optics, optoelectronic characterization, and device physics.
Key responsibilities include exfoliating atomically thin crystals, fabricating twisted heterostructures by deterministic dry transfer, determining crystal orientation and twist angle using optical and second-harmonic generation techniques, building optoelectronic devices, and measuring photovoltaic effects with spatially resolved, wavelength-dependent, and polarization-dependent photocurrent experiments. The role also includes supervision of MSc and BSc projects and dissemination through publications and conferences.
Eligibility highlights: a strong academic background in physics, nanotechnology, materials science, electrical engineering, photonics, or a related field; a two-year master's degree (120 ECTS) or equivalent; and advantageous experience in 2D materials, optical spectroscopy, photovoltaics, electrical transport, semiconductor devices, nonlinear optics, or micro-/nanofabrication.
Funding: the position is a 3-year full-time PhD scholarship with salary and appointment terms governed by the Danish collective agreement and DTU salary structure. No specific stipend amount is listed.
Application deadline: 30 October 2026, 23:59 Danish time. Apply online by submitting one PDF containing the cover letter, CV, transcripts, BSc/MSc diploma, publication list if relevant, and a brief letter of interest.
