About this position

PhD scholarship in High-Speed Hyperspectral and Super-Resolution Terahertz Imaging at DTU Electro, Technical University of Denmark in Kgs. Lyngby, Denmark.

This PhD project sits at the intersection of terahertz imaging, ultrafast photonics, nonlinear optical detection, coherent imaging, and machine learning. The work is part of the DFF-funded INSPIRING project, which aims to combine broadband THz-to-near-infrared upconversion with CMOS-array detection to enable high-speed hyperspectral THz imaging. The successful candidate will help establish the imaging platform and develop hyperspectral and ML-based methods for super-resolution imaging and material identification.

Research tasks include developing and operating a broadband coherent THz imaging platform using optical rectification and/or laser-induced plasma THz sources, implementing wide-field imaging with THz-to-NIR upconversion and CMOS focal-plane-array detection, acquiring and analyzing time-domain hyperspectral THz data with target bandwidth above 10 THz, and applying machine-learning methods such as CNNs and autoencoder-type architectures for super-resolution reconstruction and material identification.

The project will study semiconductors, polymers, multilayer structures, and industrial test samples. You will work in an international, interdisciplinary team at DTU Electro and collaborate with project partners in Denmark and abroad. A planned 3–6-month research stay in Prof. Xi-Cheng Zhang’s group at the University of Rochester, USA is included.

Eligibility highlights: a two-year master’s degree (120 ECTS) or equivalent is required. A strong background in experimental photonics, optics, applied physics, electrical engineering, or a closely related field is expected. Experience with THz spectroscopy, ultrafast laser systems, nonlinear optics, optical imaging, scientific programming, data analysis, image processing, or machine learning is highly desirable. Strong English communication skills and the ability to work independently in an interdisciplinary environment are emphasized.

Funding and terms: the position is a 3-year PhD scholarship with salary and appointment terms based on the Danish collective agreement and DTU’s salary structure for scientific staff. No specific stipend amount is listed.

Application deadline: 30 November 2026, 23:59 Danish time. Apply online and upload all materials as one PDF.
