About this position
University of Antwerp is advertising a full-time PhD / doctoral scholarship in redox flow batteries within the Applied Electrochemistry and Catalysis (ELCAT) research group, Faculty of Applied Engineering, Department of Biochemical and Chemical Engineering.
The project focuses on renewable energy storage and the development of safer, scalable battery technologies. The successful candidate will study how battery design, operating conditions, and redox chemistry influence performance and lifetime, with a particular emphasis on titanium-cerium redox chemistry, electrolyte formulation, flow field design, membranes, scale-up, stacking, cross-over, power density, and electrolyte precipitation.
The position is embedded in an excellent research environment with more than 40 researchers and state-of-the-art laboratory facilities. The role includes research leading to a PhD thesis, publication of scientific articles and/or patents, limited teaching tasks, and research support within the group and faculty.
Eligibility highlights: a Master’s degree in chemical engineering, applied engineering/industrial science: chemistry, or a related field (or completion before start); excellent academic results; strong understanding of mass transfer and reactor engineering; safe laboratory practice; good English communication skills (C1 is a plus); ability to work independently and organize tasks well. Experience with electrochemical systems such as redox flow batteries is an advantage. Recommendation letters are strongly encouraged.
Funding: the scholarship is initially for one year and may be renewed after positive evaluation for up to four years total. The monthly stipend follows University of Antwerp doctoral scholarship scales, with additional allowances such as ecocheques, internet connectivity support, and commuting support.
Location: most work will be carried out at Campus Drie Eiken and Campus Groenenborger in Antwerp, Belgium.
Application deadline: 12 November 2026. Apply via the University of Antwerp online job application platform and include a motivation letter and academic CV. Position-specific questions can be sent to Prof. Jonas Hereijgers ([email protected]).
