About this position
PhD scholarship opportunity at The University of Newcastle in printed solar technology, photovoltaics, and solar energy. This iPhD project focuses on developing a technical framework for testing printed solar technologies, an emerging class of ultra-lightweight, flexible photovoltaics. The research aims to address the gap between current international standards and the unique degradation and performance characteristics of printed solar devices.
The project will investigate how printed solar panels differ from conventional silicon panels and why existing IEC standards such as IEC 61215 and IEC 61730 may be too harsh or not fully relevant for these devices. The outcome will be a new testing framework and standards approach that could support regulatory approval and accelerate commercial adoption of printed solar technology.
Supervisor: Prof Paul Dastoor.
Funding: Four-year scholarship package with a stipend of $48,071 per annum (2026 rate), a four-year Project Expense and Development package starting from $13,000 per annum, a structured professional development and training program, a four-year tuition fee package, a 60-day industry engagement component with Kardinia Energy, and up to $1,500 relocation allowance.
Eligibility: Available to domestic students. Applicants should have a bachelor's degree in science (ideally physics) or engineering (ideally electrical), strong technical aptitude, and an interest in becoming a researcher. Prior exposure to solar photovoltaics research is an advantage.
How to apply: Email your expression of interest to [email protected]. Include scanned academic transcripts, a CV, a brief statement of research interests, and a proposal linking your background to the project. See the CSIRO iPhD page for further information.
