About this position
Flinders University’s Nguyen Lab is recruiting a PhD candidate for research in wearable sensors, biosensors, implantable biosensors, bioelectronic medicine, flexible electronics, microfabrication, and functional nanomaterials.
The project focuses on developing next-generation wearable and implantable biosensors for continuous health monitoring and translation toward real-world on-body diagnostic devices. The successful candidate will work in the Advanced Mechanical Systems & Bioelectronic Medical Devices group led by Dr Khoa Tuan Nguyen, whose research spans advanced manufacturing, flexible and implantable electronics, and biosensing.
The role involves designing, fabricating, and characterising wearable and/or biosensor devices for physiological or biomolecular sensing. Depending on background and interests, the work may include device design, microfabrication, functional material/interface engineering, and integration/testing of sensors in wearable or implantable formats.
This is a fully funded PhD scholarship for 3.5 years. It covers tuition fees and provides a stipend of AUD 36,061 per year, increasing annually, plus additional benefits. The project also offers access to state-of-the-art fabrication and characterisation facilities, including national cleanroom infrastructure (ANFF), and training in multidisciplinary skills spanning device engineering, materials science, and biosensing.
Eligibility highlights include a Bachelor’s or Master’s degree, Honours, or equivalent research experience in Mechanical, Electrical, Biomedical, or Materials Engineering, Physics, Chemistry, or a related discipline. Applicants should have a strong academic record, research interest, good communication skills, and the ability to work independently and collaboratively. Candidates must meet Flinders University PhD admission and English-language requirements. Desirable experience includes surface functionalisation, interface chemistry, microtechnology/microfabrication, biosensors, wearable electronics, or semiconductor device fabrication.
Applications are reviewed on a rolling basis until the position is filled. To apply, send a CV, academic transcripts, and a brief cover letter to [email protected].
