About this position

DTU Physics is advertising PhD scholarships in “live” electron microscopy in catalysis at the atomic scale at the Center for Visualizing Catalytic Processes (VISION) in Kgs. Lyngby, Denmark.

The project focuses on operando, atomic-resolution transmission electron microscopy (TEM) to observe catalysts in action under realistic conditions. Research themes include catalytic materials, gas-surface interactions, molecular adsorption, active-site formation, nanoparticle restructuring, surface dynamics, microfabricated reactors, and Python-based image/data analysis. The work sits at the intersection of physics, chemistry, materials science, and computational modelling, with strong links to catalysis and surface science.

VISION is described as a highly collaborative, international, interdisciplinary environment at DTU Physics. The center is funded by the Danish National Research Foundation and is housed in DTU’s new Climate Challenge Laboratory. The project aims to reveal how catalysts function at the atomic scale and to support the design of next-generation catalyst materials.

Eligibility highlights: candidates should have a degree in physics, chemistry, or materials science; documented skills in atomic-resolution TEM; experience in microfabricated devices, 2D materials, catalysis and/or surface science; strong Python/scientific programming skills; excellent Bachelor and Master grades; good English; and the ability to work independently and in teams. A two-year master’s degree (120 ECTS) or equivalent is required.

Funding and terms: the position is a 3-year PhD employment under DTU’s collective agreement framework. No specific stipend amount is listed. Applicants may apply before receiving the master’s degree, but they cannot start until the degree has been awarded.
