About this position

[4-year Norwich Research Park Biosciences Doctoral Training Partnership PhD CASE studentship with Biotechnica; includes payment of tuition fees, a stipend for living expenses at the 2026/27 rate of £21,805 per year, and a Research Training Support Grant of £5,000 per year.]

PhD Studentship: Empowering Green Seaweeds as Beneficial Health Products at the University of East Anglia.

This PhD project explores the health potential of green Ulva seaweeds, with a focus on identifying bioactive metabolites, understanding how they affect the gut microbiome, and determining the mechanisms by which gut microbes metabolise seaweed fibres. The work is designed to generate fundamental scientific insight while also supporting innovation in seaweed-derived health products and related commercialisation pathways.

Working with CASE partner Biotechnica, the project will involve profiling Ulva fibre active metabolites, studying their impacts on gut microbiota and host health, and characterising the microbial mechanisms involved in breaking down these fibres. The project combines advanced metabolomics, including NMR spectroscopy, with multiomics, bioinformatics, molecular microbiology, functional genomics, cell biology, and organoid biology. Key biological readouts include effects on host gene expression, such as GLP-1 and gut barrier function.

The student will be based at QIB, University of East Anglia, and Biotechnica, receiving multidisciplinary training in molecular biology, gut microbiology, analytical chemistry, scientific writing, industrial engagement, and IP protection. The project includes an industrial placement at Biotechnica, opportunities to present at conferences, and support to publish research findings.

This is a 4-year Norwich Research Park Biosciences Doctoral Training Partnership PhD CASE studentship. Funding includes tuition fees, a stipend for living expenses at the 2026/27 rate of £21,805 per year, and a Research Training Support Grant of £5,000 per year.

Applicants should be motivated, proactive, and independent, with relevant experience desirable. The application deadline is 23:59 on 30 November 2026. Applications should be made via the Apply button on the project page.
