About this position
PhD studentship at the University of Cambridge in partnership with AstraZeneca: Next-generation targeted protein degradation (TPD) for oncology, focusing on ubiquitin-independent pathways, proteasome-targeting tools, Midnolin biology, cell biology, and biochemistry.
The Department of Pharmacology at the University of Cambridge is offering a funded PhD studentship to develop novel approaches for targeted protein degradation in cancer research. The project will be carried out in the lab of Dr Catherine Lindon, with a supervisory team including Dr Gustavo Gutierrez (Discovery Sciences, AstraZeneca), Professor Laura Itzhaki (Department of Pharmacology), Dr Sharan Bagal (Oncology Chemistry, AstraZeneca), and Dr David McGarry (Oncology Bioscience, AstraZeneca).
Research interests include proteasome biology, Midnolin, discovery of binders, engineering degrader tools, and exploring endogenous regulation across cellular time and space. The project is especially suited to students with a strong interest in cell biology and biochemistry, and enthusiasm for TPD approaches in oncology.
Funding: available for 4 years; covers stipend and tuition fees at the Home rate. Overseas applicants may apply if they meet UK residency requirements (home fees) or can secure funding for the extra international fee difference. Self-funding of the fee difference is not allowed.
Eligibility: applicants should have or shortly expect to obtain a first or high 2:1 bachelor's degree from a UK university, or an equivalent overseas degree, in a relevant subject. Strong knowledge and/or experience in biochemistry and cell biology is preferred.
How to apply: submit an application via the University Application portal, choose PhD in Pharmacology, and use the studentship title as your proposed project title. Instead of a full research proposal, upload one side of A4 describing your motivation, relevant skills, what you hope to achieve, and long-term career aspirations.
Deadline: Monday 16 November 2026.
