About this position

The School of Natural Sciences at the University of Kent is inviting applications for 4 fully funded PhD (GTA) studentships starting in January 2027. The advertised research areas span Biochemistry, Cell Biology, Chemistry, Computational Biology, Genetics, and Sports, Exercise and Rehabilitation Sciences.

Projects include topics such as protein hydras for cancer treatment, synthetic cellular health dashboards, circular DNA and plant evolution, photocatalysts for light-driven synthesis, critical mineral extraction from seawater, solid-state cooling, Raman-active chemical taggants, social chromosome genomics, microbiome-based approaches to neurodegenerative disease, appetite and metabolism, and biomechanics/AI for exercise and injury risk.

This is a competitive, fully funded doctoral opportunity for UK/Home students. Funding includes tuition fees plus a maintenance grant and salary equivalent to the UKRI National Minimum Doctoral Stipend (£21,805 for 2026/27) for the first three years, followed by fees and maintenance grant for a further six months. Scholars also receive teacher training through the Associate Fellowship Scheme.

Applicants should normally hold, or expect to obtain, a first or upper second-class honours degree in a relevant subject, and ideally a Master’s degree or equivalent. The school also looks for strong academic excellence, research potential, and the ability to contribute to laboratory, seminar, and practical undergraduate teaching.

Before applying, candidates must contact the relevant supervisor for their chosen project. The application should be submitted through the PhD pathway and must include a research proposal outline, reasons for study, qualifications, teaching experience, two academic references, and supporting documents. Applicants should also clearly state that they wish to be considered for the GTA.

Deadline: 23 October 2026.
