About this position
This is a fully funded PhD studentship at the University of Essex within the Sustainable Transitions – Leverhulme Doctoral Training Programme. The project explores the role of international economic law in environmental policy, asking how soft and hard law can facilitate or hinder environmental policy decision-making, policy outputs, and policy effectiveness. The topic sits at the intersection of law, government, environmental governance, trade, investment, finance, and international politics.
The studentship is designed for a candidate from an underrepresented group and includes a fully funded master’s degree followed by a fully funded interdisciplinary PhD. The successful applicant will study an appropriate master’s degree first, such as an LLM in Law, before progressing to the doctorate. The research is intentionally broad, allowing the student to develop a more specific proposal in consultation with the supervisory team.
The project uses a synthesised interdisciplinary approach, combining Law and Government. A mixed-methods design is expected, including legal analysis and analysis of secondary data. The student will be supported by the Sustainable Transitions training programme, which offers initial training in interdisciplinary research methods, training in the secondary discipline, and ongoing support throughout the programme.
Funding is substantial: a home tuition fee waiver, a living stipend at the UKRI recommended level (£21,805 for 2026-27), a £2,500 Proficio training allocation, and a £10,000 research allowance for costs such as supplies, equipment, and fieldwork. Sustainable Transitions scholars also join the University of Essex Centre for Environment and Society, gaining access to events and networking opportunities.
Eligibility is limited to UK-domiciled applicants who meet specific widening-participation criteria. Applicants must not already hold a Master’s degree from the host institution, must come from a low-income household background and/or meet the listed ethnicity criteria, and should have a background in law with an interest in political science. Prior political science experience is helpful but not required, as training will be provided.
