About this position
PhD Studentship at the University of Bath in the NIHR Mental Health Research Group, with strong links to Exeter and Bristol, focused on improving clinical services for young people with disruptive behaviour disorders such as conduct disorder.
This project is part of a competition for one of 18 fully funded MRC studentships starting in October 2027. It will investigate how mental health services are provided for children and young people with disruptive behaviour disorders, using a nationally representative survey of healthcare professionals, commissioners, and parents/caregivers. The study aims to identify whether young people are diagnosed and accepted for treatment, whether services follow NICE guidance, and what barriers and facilitators shape access to care and effective treatment.
The PhD will also use existing longitudinal data to explore the impact of accessing versus not accessing mental health support on outcomes for children and parents, including mental health, wellbeing, and health economics. Additional work may include qualitative and quantitative methods such as a vignette study on recognition and diagnosis of disruptive behaviour disorders, plus analysis of cohort data on treatment access and trajectories over time.
The project is strongly oriented toward service mapping, clinical care pathways, healthcare commissioning, and mental health policy. The output is intended to produce a public national map of care in England, highlight good practice, and identify ways to reduce barriers to access for families affected by disruptive behaviour disorders.
Funding includes a stipend of £21,805 per annum, up to £2000 per year for research costs and training, £300 per year for travel or conference attendance, and flexible funding of up to £5000 for high-cost research and/or external training. Full tuition fees for 4 years at the UK/Home rate are covered. The studentship is open to both Home and International applicants, although international students must cover visa, healthcare surcharge, and relocation-related costs themselves.
Applicants should contact the named supervisor and apply via the MRC GW4 BioMed application link. Deadline: 21 October 2026.
