About this position

Postdoctoral Scholarship in Experimental Systems Neuroscience at Karolinska Institutet (Solna, Sweden), in the Stagkourakis Lab based at SciLifeLab and the Department of Neuroscience.

The lab studies the neural control of survival and homeostatic behaviors, including aggression, fear, and feeding, using large-scale neural recordings, advanced imaging, causal perturbations, and quantitative analysis in freely moving mice. The environment is highly technical and interdisciplinary, with infrastructure for Neuropixels and high-channel silicon probe electrophysiology, miniscope and two-photon microscopy, SLM-enabled photostimulation, stereotaxic surgery, viral injections, and advanced behavioral paradigms.

This is a postdoctoral scholarship rather than a standard employment contract. It is intended for foreign researchers pursuing postdoctoral qualification in Sweden. Applicants must hold a doctorate (or equivalent) and should have substantial hands-on experience in at least one core experimental domain, especially stereotaxic surgery, in vivo electrophysiology, in vivo imaging, or RNA sequencing/spatial transcriptomics. Strong independence and proficiency in MATLAB or Python data analysis are important, and experience with behavioral hardware/software integration, Arduino, Bonsai, DataJoint, machine learning, or collaborative computational work is a plus.

Funding is tax-free and paid in 12-month blocks, with a maximum duration of two years within a four-year period after the PhD. The post is located in Solna at Biomedicum and SciLifeLab. The application deadline is 2026-10-20, and applications are reviewed on a rolling basis.

What's required

Applicants must have a doctorate or equivalent foreign degree, or complete all doctorate requirements before the intended start date. The scholarship is only for foreign researchers who come to Sweden for postdoctoral education; people resident in Sweden or who have carried out all or part of their academic education at KI or another Swedish institution are not eligible. Strong hands-on experience in at least one core domain is required, especially stereotaxic surgery in mice with viral injections and/or implantations, large-scale in vivo electrophysiology (preferably Neuropixels or high-channel silicon probes), in vivo imaging (miniscope and/or two-photon microscopy), or RNA sequencing/spatial transcriptomics. Candidates should also have high independence, ability to build and maintain complex experimental setups, and proficiency in big-data analysis using MATLAB or Python; experience with behavioral paradigm design, hardware/software synchronization, Arduino, Bonsai, DataJoint, machine learning, collaborative projects, scRNA sequencing, or non-traditional animal models is advantageous.
