About this position
Postdoctoral scholarship in Bioinformatics at Umeå University, Sweden
The Department of Medical and Translational Biology at Umeå University is offering a 2-year full-time postdoctoral scholarship in bioinformatics within the project “Transposable elements and the aging human brain: Functional Insights and therapeutic opportunities”. The work will be carried out in the Horváth Lab and focuses on human brain aging, epigenetics, transposable elements, oligodendrocytes, single-cell and long-read sequencing, and multi-omics integration.
The project will analyze post-mortem human brain samples using approaches such as 10x Genomics single-nuclei RNA sequencing, Oxford Nanopore long-read DNA and RNA sequencing, Illumina RNA sequencing, and CUT&RUN. The postdoctoral fellow will integrate DNA methylation, chromatin regulation, TE expression, and gene expression data using advanced bioinformatics methods to understand age-related molecular changes in the white matter of the brain.
Applicants should hold a doctoral degree (or equivalent) in bioinformatics, computer science, neuroscience, genome biology, molecular biology, biomedicine, genetics, or a related field. Required experience includes analysis of genomics/epigenomics/transcriptomics data with R, Python, and shell, use of tools such as edgeR, DESeq2, and bedtools, integration of complex omics datasets, and a record of scientific productivity. Strong English communication skills are essential; experience with supercomputing clusters, single-cell data, long-read data, epigenetics, transposable elements, or genome assembly is desirable.
The scholarship is stipend-based and runs for two years, with access starting in September 2026 or by agreement. The application deadline is 2026-09-11.
To apply, submit an English or Swedish application through Umeå University’s Varbi system. Include a cover letter, CV and publication list, proof of doctoral degree or expected completion, thesis if available, and contact details for two references.
