About this position

Karolinska Institutet is advertising a postdoctoral scholarship in integrative metabolism at the Department of Molecular Medicine and Surgery in Solna, Sweden. The project is led by Professor Juleen R. Zierath and focuses on the molecular drivers of metabolic dysfunction, especially the interplay between circadian rhythms, insulin resistance, skeletal muscle metabolism, and type 2 diabetes.

The research group is interdisciplinary, with expertise in clinical physiology and medicine, cell physiology, exercise physiology, molecular biology, and bioinformatics. The work includes studying regulation of circadian rhythms and insulin sensitivity in skeletal muscle and at the whole-body level using several model systems, as well as disease mechanisms and protocol/assay development.

Applicants should have doctoral training in experimental research. Experience in cellular metabolism, both in vitro and in vivo, is desired. Additional merits include FELASA certification or similar, experience from clinical studies and human sample analysis, circadian biology, cell signalling, and bioinformatic analysis of large datasets. The candidate must be fluent in English, have excellent writing skills, be able to lead projects, and work well in a collaborative team.

This is a scholarship position rather than a salaried job. The scholarship is tax free, normally awarded for 12 months at a time and paid in six-month instalments; in exceptional cases shorter periods may be accepted. The scholarship may be granted for up to two years within a four-year period after the doctorate.

To apply, prepare a CV, publication list, and a one-page summary of current work in English or Swedish, then submit everything through the Varbi recruitment system. The deadline is 16 August 2026.

Funding details

Full funding including tuition fees and living expenses is available for this position. The scholarship covers all educational costs and provides a monthly stipend.

How to apply

Please submit your application including a cover letter, CV, academic transcripts, and contact information for two references. Applications should be sent via the online portal before the deadline.
