What Is a PhD Statement of Purpose?

A Statement of Purpose is a short essay—usually one to two pages—where you outline your academic background, research experience, and future goals. Unlike a personal statement, which focuses more on your story and personal journey, the SoP is about your academic path and your potential as a researcher.




Why a Strong SoP Matters

PhD programs often receive hundreds of applications. Your SoP is what helps the admissions committee understand:
