About this position

BRGM is recruiting a postdoctoral researcher in machine learning and AI for science for the InnovTech project in Orléans, France. The 18-month project addresses a major challenge in mineral processing: predicting how mineral ores will fragment under different energy levels, even before fragmentation experiments are performed.

The research will develop digital fragmentability models that connect observable material characteristics with fragmentation behavior. The project combines heterogeneous scientific data, including microscopy and image analysis, material and mineral characterization, particle geometry and morphology, mechanical fragmentation experiments, time-series signals, fragmentation outcomes, and particle-size distributions.

The postdoctoral researcher will work on multimodal learning and data fusion, representation learning from heterogeneous scientific data, probabilistic modeling, uncertainty quantification, and multi-scale predictive modeling in limited-data settings. The resulting models aim to predict granulometry under different operating conditions, reduce costly experimental campaigns, and support more energy-efficient comminution strategies.

The position is well suited to researchers in machine learning, deep learning, data science, scientific machine learning, applied mathematics, statistics, computer vision, or related quantitative fields. No prior background in geosciences or mineral processing is required.
