About this position

An 18-month postdoctoral research fellowship is available at the Université de Caen Normandie, specifically within the CARMeN Institut (UMR 6064) in Caen, Normandy, France, starting June 2026. The research project focuses on the synthesis of carbohydrate and nucleoside analogs functionalized by organo-fluorinated emergent groups, with a particular emphasis on studying their chemical stability in biological and environmental media. This work is highly relevant to medicinal chemistry, as fluorine atoms play a crucial role in the development of blockbuster drugs, and the project aims to propose alternatives to PFAS by developing new synthetic methodologies, including radical and ionic chemistry.

The successful candidate will work on the synthesis and characterization of new carbohydrate and nucleoside analogs containing various organo-fluorinated functional groups. The project will involve the development of innovative synthetic methodologies and the study of the reactivity of highly functionalized glycals and anhydronucleosides towards fluorinated radicals and carbanions. The chemical stability of these new compounds in biological and environmental media will be assessed, and the resulting metabolites will be identified and characterized.

Applicants must hold a PhD in organic chemistry and demonstrate a strong background in fluorine chemistry, multi-step synthesis, sugar chemistry, or nucleosides. Excellent motivation, written and relational skills, and fluency in English (speaking and writing) are required, as well as proficiency in French. The position offers a fully funded salary between 2477 € and 2697 € per month, depending on experience.

To apply, candidates should send a detailed CV (in French or English) and two recommendation letters by email to Pr. Thierry Lequeux and Dr. Emmanuel Pfund. The application deadline is June 2026. For more information, contact [email protected] or [email protected].
