About this position
The Department of Peace and Conflict Research at Uppsala University is recruiting two PhD candidates for the Democratic Institutions and Violence Network in Europe (DIViNE), a European doctoral network funded through the EU HORIZON MSCA action. The department is an internationally oriented research environment with long-standing expertise in peace research and peace and conflict studies.
The two doctoral projects are embedded in a wider network of five universities and bring together complementary approaches to the study of democratic institutions and political violence. One position focuses on how reforms introduced during democratic transitions shape violence, reconciliation, and institutional consolidation. This project is situated within research on transitional justice, decentralization, territorial and land reform, constitutional redesign, and power sharing. The other position focuses on public support for political violence in advanced democracies, examining why people tolerate or endorse political violence and how violent actors cultivate legitimacy.
Both PhD candidates will be part of a broader network of ten doctoral researchers and will participate in training modules, PhD colloquia, workshops, and secondments. The first project includes a research stay at the University of Essex and a policy-oriented secondment at CIDOB in Barcelona. The second project includes a research stay at the University of Milan and a secondment at the Clingendael Institute in the Netherlands. The posts are based at the Department of Peace and Conflict Research and include a doctoral education environment linked to working groups within DIViNE.
The successful applicants are expected to develop their own project ideas within the themes of the two positions and contribute to the research agendas through quantitative, qualitative, experimental, and comparative approaches. The advert describes a collaborative, international doctoral setting with opportunities for policy engagement and interdisciplinary research within the DIViNE network.
