About this position
The section of Statistics and Data Science within the Mathematics department at KU Leuven offers two Ph.D positions focused on advanced statistical research. The group is internationally active in robust statistical methods, anomaly detection, classification and clustering techniques, visualization, and statistical learning. Research topics include robust methods for functional and tensor data, statistical learning for anomaly detection, and applications in chemometrics, genetics, fraud detection, and other fields, often in collaboration with domain experts.
Successful candidates will contribute to the development of new statistical methods and techniques, with opportunities to tailor their research focus according to their interests and motivation. The positions are embedded in a dynamic international research environment, providing support for expertise development in statistics and data science, and offering opportunities to build an international network and present research at conferences.
Applicants must hold a master's degree in mathematics, statistics, or engineering with a strong background in statistics and at least the grade of distinction. Candidates in their final year of study may also apply if they will obtain their degree in the summer. Proficiency in R and/or Python is required, along with a good command of English and strong communication skills. A detailed transcript of study results must be included in the application.
The Ph.D position is initially offered for one year, with the possibility of renewal up to four years after positive evaluation. This period allows candidates to complete the doctoral program at KU Leuven and obtain a Ph.D in mathematics. The preferred starting date is no later than September 1, 2026.
