About this position
The section of Statistics and Data Science within the Mathematics department at KU Leuven offers two Ph.D positions in statistics. The research group is active in a wide range of topics, including robust statistical methods, anomaly detection, classification and clustering techniques, visualization, and statistical learning. The group collaborates with experts in fields such as chemometrics, genetics, and fraud detection, providing opportunities for interdisciplinary research.
Depending on your interests and motivation, your Ph.D research may focus on robust methods for functional data, robust methods for tensor data, robust statistical learning methods for anomaly detection, or the application of new statistical techniques in various domains. The research environment is dynamic and international, supporting the development of expertise in statistics and data science. You will have the opportunity to build an international network and present your ongoing research at international conferences.
The Ph.D position is initially offered for one year, with the possibility of renewal three times after positive evaluation, for a total of four years. During your Ph.D, you will follow the doctoral program of KU Leuven, which provides comprehensive academic training and support. The preferred starting date is not later than September 1, 2026.
Applicants must have a master's degree in mathematics, statistics, or engineering with a solid background in statistics and at least the grade of distinction. Candidates in their final year of study may also apply if they will obtain their degree in the summer. Good knowledge of R and/or Python is required, along with a good command of English and strong communication skills. A detailed transcript of study results must be included with the application.
KU Leuven is committed to creating an inclusive, respectful, and socially safe environment. Diversity among individuals and groups is embraced as an asset, and open dialogue and differences in perspective are considered essential for an ambitious research and educational environment. The university does not accept any form of discrimination and is dedicated to equal opportunity.
