About this position
The University of Helsinki's Human-Nature Transformations Research Group, part of the Department of Environmental Sciences, is seeking two postdoctoral researchers in ecological economics and environmental psychology. These positions are funded by Horizon Europe and focus on interdisciplinary research addressing sustainability science, environmental policy, governance, law, economics, ecology, and philosophy of science. The group is committed to innovative, participatory, and solutions-oriented research, with projects spanning biodiversity governance, environmental justice, nature-based solutions, eco-acoustics, serious games, and multispecies justice.
The first postdoctoral position in ecological economics involves developing a plural valuation assessment framework, integrating natural capital accounting, cost-benefit analysis, participatory mapping, and multi-criteria decision analysis. Candidates should have strong skills in ecosystem assessment, economic valuation, spatial analyses, and scientific writing, as well as experience in leading multi-authored journal papers and supporting teaching and project administration.
The second postdoctoral position in environmental psychology focuses on examining barriers and enablers for scaling alternative socio-economic models for nature restoration, including participation levels and challenges over time. Essential skills include social survey research, univariate and multivariate statistical analyses, scientific writing, and the ability to work independently and collaboratively in interdisciplinary teams. Both positions require a 5% teaching commitment and additional service support.
Successful candidates are expected to reside in Finland for the duration of their employment and be present in the University of Helsinki office at least 40% of the work week. The positions start in September 2026 and may continue until August 2029, with a six-month trial period. The starting salary ranges from 3400–3800 euros per month, and comprehensive employee benefits are provided, including health care, insurance, pension, holidays, sports facilities, and professional development opportunities. Travel funding for field research is also available.
Applicants should submit a response to the essential criteria, a CV, publication list, and contact information for two referees via the University of Helsinki Recruitment System. The application deadline is 27 February 2026, but applications will be reviewed as received and positions may be filled early. For further information, contact Professor Christopher Raymond at [email protected].
