About this position
The University of Southern Denmark invites applications for a two-year postdoctoral position at the Nordic Humanities Center for Challenge-Based Inquiry, affiliated with the Department of Culture and Language in Odense.
The center brings together scholars from the humanities faculties of the University of Copenhagen and the University of Southern Denmark to develop new perspectives, narratives, and frameworks for local and global societal challenges. The successful postdoctoral researcher will join the center’s first research group, which focuses on a Nordic theme.
The project examines the development of challenge-based approaches in university research, including applied science, mission-driven research, and challenge-based inquiry. From perspectives informed by the sociology of science and history of science, the researcher will investigate initiatives in Denmark and the Nordic countries, with particular attention to the humanities. The work will also explore how Danish and Nordic humanists understand and conduct research on societal challenges, cooperate with external partners, and assess the opportunities and difficulties associated with this form of inquiry.
Alongside this mapping and analytical work, the postdoctoral researcher will conduct an individual research project within the field and contribute to the center’s academic activities and events. The research environment is interdisciplinary and oriented toward developing new approaches to humanities research in relation to issues such as inequality, war, health, artificial intelligence, and the climate crisis.
The position is based at SDU’s Odense campus, where the Department of Culture and Language is situated on the island of Funen. The researcher will work within a collaborative center involving scholars across two Danish universities and engage with Nordic research communities and external partners.
The position is a temporary two-year postdoctoral appointment with an expected start by February 1, 2027, or as soon as possible thereafter.
