About this position
Postdoctoral Researcher in AI & Smart Energy Systems at the Instituto Universitario de Automática e Informática Industrial (ai2), Universitat Politècnica de València, in Valencia, Spain.
This post is part of the MAC4CE project, which focuses on the optimal operation of urban energy communities through a novel control architecture combining Graph Neural Networks and Multi-Agent Reinforcement Learning. The successful candidate will work on distributed control methods for complex energy systems, with an emphasis on real-time operations, energy routing, flexibility, and the modelling of power-grid topologies and spatial dependencies.
The researcher will develop simulation environments, implement and validate algorithms, and contribute to mathematical optimisation models for conditional multi-agent control. The role sits at the intersection of advanced control systems and artificial intelligence, with a strong engineering and computational focus.
The position is hosted by ai2 at UPV, an institute described as one of Spain’s premier automation and computer science research environments, with an international research community. The post also involves publication in leading journals and presentation at major international conferences, and includes opportunities to contribute to mentoring PhD candidates and junior researchers within the group.

What's required
A Ph.D. in Industrial Engineering, Electrical Engineering, Automation/Control Engineering, Computer Science, or a closely related STEM field is required. The candidate should have a strong background in advanced control theory, mathematical optimization, and deep learning architectures, with proven research experience in Reinforcement Learning (ideally multi-agent settings) and Graph Neural Networks (GNNs). Advanced programming skills in Python (PyTorch, TensorFlow) and/or MATLAB/Simulink are expected. Excellent written and oral communication skills in English are required; knowledge of Spanish is not required. The advert also indicates 1–4 years of research experience as a relevant profile.
