About this position

Advanced Chemical Engineering MSc at the University of Edinburgh is a one-year, full-time postgraduate programme delivered on campus at the King’s Buildings campus through the School of Engineering.

The programme focuses on advanced and multidisciplinary approaches to major global challenges in chemical engineering. Students explore carbon capture and storage, sustainable water resources, alternative energy technologies, energy storage and fuels, pharmaceutical and food-processing systems, and emerging applications in healthcare, biomedicine and biotechnology.

Teaching places particular emphasis on multi-scale and integrated solutions, connecting molecular and nanoscale principles with process-scale design. The curriculum develops expertise in numerical methods, molecular thermodynamics, research methods, advanced process design and the use of modern chemical engineering software and experimental techniques.

Following two semesters of taught study, students undertake an individual summer research project and dissertation supervised by an academic member of staff. Projects are designed to have industrial and research relevance and may involve novel materials, sustainable processes, advanced modelling and simulation, experimental methods or engineering applications across energy, pharmaceuticals, food and drink, healthcare and biotechnology.

Students learn through lectures, seminars, laboratory work, coursework, design projects, workshops, guest lectures and research activities. The School of Engineering provides a research-intensive, multidisciplinary environment in which MSc students can interact with academics, researchers and PhD students across its institutes and programmes. The programme is accredited by the Institution of Chemical Engineers, with recognition relevant to graduates pursuing Chartered Engineer status.
